Sir
Satyendranath Bose, (1894-1974)
Indian Physicist, who solved one of the mysteries
of quantum mechanics, showing that in the quantum
world some particles are indistinguishable. His collaborations
with Albert Einstein led to a new branch on statistical
mechanics know commonly known as the “Einstein-Bose”
statistics.

The
salient activities of the Department and the State
Council in 2005-2006 and the proposed activities for
2006-2007 are mentioned herein:

Awareness and
popularization of Science
|
With
a view to disseminating science in the life of the
common people this Department with the assistance
of State Council has largely supported science popularization
programmes through science clubs and other voluntary
organizations, college, schools etc. throughout the
state of West Bengal. These programmes include exhibitions,
seminars, workshops, vigyan mela jathas etc. aimed
at creating scientific temper amongst common people
for removing the commonly prevalent superstitions.

Bengal
Science Lectures
|
As
part of Scientific Awareness programmes this Department
and the Council has continued Bengal Science Lectures
by some of the most prominent and leading scientists
of India. During 2005-06 ‘Bengal Science Lectures’
have been arranged in various promising field of science
namely: Space Science, Global Warming, Bio-diversity
etc.
Prof. U.R.Rao,Chairman, PRL Council, ISRO, DOS, spoke
on “Space Technology – key to poverty
elevation and Sustainable development” on 12th
August, 2005. Dr. A.P.Mitra, Ex Director General,
CSIR, spoke on “Gobal Changes & India :
Issues & Perspectives” on 9th September,
2005.
Prof. Madhav Gadgil, Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore spoke on “The Science & Art of
Counting Tigers” on 22nd November, 2005.

Celebration
of International Year of Physics:
|
The
year 2005 has been designated the International Year
of Physics” by United Nations coinciding with
the centenary of the enunciation of the Theory of
relativity by Albert Einstein in 1905. To capitalize
the tremendous possibilities offered by the celebration
of the year of physics, this Department and the Council
organized a series of activities through the schools,
colleges and the NGOs’ throughout West Bengal,
aimed at appreciating the impact of physics in everyday
life. More than a hundred schools and colleges, all
over West Bengal have risen to the occasion and have
organised Seminars, Workshops, Exhibitions etc. –
for popularization of Science with special emphasis
on the International Year of Physics with assistance
from S & T Deptt. The Indian Physical Society
organized various programmes namely, ‘The 23rd
IPS colloquium for Young Physicist-2005’; Central
Workshop (2 days) for school teachers selected from
the schools of different districts; State level International
Year of Physics Talent Search Programme and Workshop-cum-Seminar
on Physics, etc.

Biodiversity
Register :
|
A
school level project on “ Preparation of Biodiversity
Register of the local areas by the school students
“ has been taken up in the district of North
24 Parganas. The preparation of a Biodiversity Register
by the school students, with the guidance of their
teachers and local experts is a venture towards maintaining
and building awareness of the environment & habitat.
The programme is proposed to be extended to other
districts
