Sir Srinivasa Ramanujam
(1887 – 1920):
Great Indian Mathematician, whose interest from academics at Trinity, College, Cambridge, led him to collaborate there and postulate and prove well over 3,542 theorems.

In the field of medical research and allied areas.

National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases
All India Institute of Public Health Engineering
Chittaranjan Cancer Research Centre and
National Institute of Orthopedically handicapped, Bonhooghly

have put commendable services for the benefit of the society.
Some important contribution of some of these organisations include :
Vaccine against HIV infection has been developed (NICED, Kolkata).
A recombinant cholera vaccine has been developed. Phase I and II clinical trials      completed (NICED, Kolkata, IICB, Kolkata and IMTECH, Chandigarh).
The following specialty glass have been developed and delivered to different  agencies of strategic              importance —
a)
optical glass
b)
Radiation Shielding Window     (RSW) Glass
c)
Neodymium-doped Phosphate Laser Glass
d)
Ultra-low Expansion      Transparent Glass-ceramics
e) Radio Photo-luminescent Glass (RPL),      Infra-red      Transmitting Filters (CGCRI, Kolkata).

Single and multi mode optical fibre for communication and erbium doped fibres for      optical amplifier for cable TV network have been developed and technology      transferred (CGCRI, Kolkata).
Low cost ceramic membrane based water purification technology to remove Arsenic      and Iron has been developed and are operating successfully in different areas of      West Bengal. Ceramic based biomedical implants developed. Ceramic coating on      metallic Aero engine components developed and regularly supplied to HAL, Koraput      (CGCRI, Kolkata).

Performance of West Bengal in the S&T sector (education, training, research and transfer of technology to the grassroot level and creating scientific temper) has always been remarkable. This has been maintained and intensified with the establishment of the specialized universities like
Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya
Bengal Engineering & Science University
West Bengal University of Technology
West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences and State Universities like
   Jadavpur and Calcutta.

Over a period of last few years, precisely since 1996, when private engineering colleges were permitted to operate, the engineering education scenario of the State has undergone a sea change. Till 1994, total intake in engineering colleges was 2050 with 11 institutions and as of now, the number of institutions has gone up to 52 (2004-05) with an intake capacity of around 13000.
West Bengal currently ranks 5th in the number of engineering seats that are available for the deserving students every year. In the academic year 2002-2003, for which the all-India figures are available, West Bengal offered 10,204 seats compared to Tamil Nadu’s 75,107, Andhra Pradesh’s 67,720, Maharashtra’s 46,486 and Karnataka’s 40,385.
