Over
a period of last few years, precisely since 1996, when private
engineering colleges were permitted to operate, the engineering
education scenario of the State has undergone a sea change.
Till 1994, total intake in engineering colleges was 2050 with
11 institutions and as of now, the number of institutions
has gone up to 52 (2004-05) with an intake capacity of around
13000.
West Bengal currently ranks 5th in the number of engineering
seats that are available for the deserving students every
year. In the academic year 2002-2003, for which the all-India
figures are available, West Bengal offered 10,204 seats compared
to Tamil Nadu’s 75,107, Andhra Pradesh’s 67,720,
Maharashtra’s 46,486 and Karnataka’s 40,385. |
