Qualitywise, the engineering students from West Bengal have
excelled. If Graduate Aptitude Test Examination (GATE) conducted
by the IITs for postgraduate engineering admission is considered
to be the best yardstick for judging the quality of students,
the students from West Bengal have made the State proud by securing
the highest percentage of Success in 2004 (nearly 24.2%) compared
to all major states (Tamil Nadu—10.10, Madhya Pradesh—16.01,
Maharashtra 15.68 and Karnataka 13.35).

West
Bengal has been surging ahead at a faster pace in the field
of engineering education. The Government of India has selected
the state out of turn for its Technical Education Quality
Improvement Programme (TEQIP), a World Bank
assisted scheme. Under this programme, 3 universities –
Jadavpur University, Bengal Engineering and Science University,
Shibpur and Calcutta University and 8 engineering colleges
(4 in the Government sector and 4 in the private) have started
receiving grants from the World Bank. A sum of Rs.153
crores of World Bank assistance has been approved
for these 11 institutions of the state for the coming three
years and if our colleges can fruitfully utilize the amount
within a given timeframe, they may be granted even more assistance

C.U.
(1857) along with Bombay University and Madras University
are now 150 years old. They have launched a joint academic
programme through framing virtual courses and new degrees
and thus provide equitable access to the best of their resources.
The three networked universities would link up lectures, the
libraries and laboratories. It would identify best experts
in national and international sphere and make the best lectures
accessible to students. It would create databanks and archives
and digitised libraries, which would offer seamless access
to any one who would be interested.
